This week I would like to share a song with you that is deeply personal, not only to me, but also to my family.
My mum lost her first husband at a very young age. I have grown up in awe of my mum’s strength and the way she rebuilt her life after his death. How she got through the loss of her first love, the hopes and dreams and the future she had planned with him. She is a true inspiration to me and I thank God for the beautiful and strong woman she is.
At the time of his death, my mum was a young woman living during the height of the 70’s and ABBA were ruling the music scene. There was a specific song of theirs that became very special to her and helped her through such an awful time in her life. She drew great encouragement from its meaningful message. It is called “Chiquitita.”
In the past I would think of how my mum had lost her first husband so young and I would lie awake, looking at mine, sending silent prayers to God to never allow that to happen to me.
During the time since my husband left me, music has become such a powerful force in helping me to get through. My mum reminded me recently of the ABBA song that helped her through her loss, suggesting that I listen to it.
When I did, it took my breath away. I have heard this song over the years but listening to it now is like allowing a beam of light to pierce the darkness.
It is a shining promise that even though it might feel like everything is over, it isn’t. It proclaims that one day you will be okay and one day you will be happy again, if you only try to carry on and get through. ABBA sings this promise in such a powerful way as though they truly know it to be true.
I wanted to share the chorus with you specifically.

Our losses are very different, my mum’s through tragic death and mine through brutal abandonement and betrayal. Two very different experiences but one shared understanding of the grief and loss of the man we loved, our husbands.
I hope this song brings you encouragement and strength to continue on through the difficult time in your life that you may be facing. I want you to be reminded that, in the words of ABBA, ‘you and I cry, but the sun is still in the sky and shining above you.’

Your mum sounds like an incredible woman. I find my mother to be an inspiration, too, so I’m glad we both have wonderful mommas in our lives, makes us very lucky. You’re right, music and lyrics can be incredibly powerful. I’m glad that song has also given you some comfort and fire in your being to soothe your soul, you’ve been through such trauma with what happened with your own husband, and Abba are spot on; things will be okay, you’ll find a way through it, and you’ll find yourself stronger for it too. They are wonderful words indeed, it’s been along time since I listened to that song also! I have written much in my blog about my wonderful late Mum, she was an incredible inspiration to me. x
