This week, I would like to share with you a song that I think has the power to really fire you up and empower you. It’s an oldie but has become a real favourite of mine lately.

It’s ‘Dreams’ by Van Halen and it’s quite the 80’s rock classic. The powerful song lyrics could easily be lost amongst the infectious synth, the foot tapping beat and the roaring guitars that I defy you not to want to air guitar to, ‘Bill & Ted’ style. The lyrics themselves though are really inspirational.

This song is all about overcoming struggles and reaching for our dreams. It acknowledges the tears we may cry, the times we feel we want to run away and the times when we feel empty.

After everything that has happened this past year, the lyrics speak to me so much. It acknowledges our broken dreams or obstacles to our dreams but also the importance of rising above, spreading our wings, to climb over those obstacles and if necessary, create new dreams.

This song quite literally elevates you, as it shouts at you to climb higher and higher and then sums up its whole message by proclaiming that we must reach beyond the struggles and persist “because that’s what dreams are made of.”

Dreams are rarely easy to obtain. Often on our road to achieving them we are met with struggles, heartache and loss. Equally we may have to forge new dreams for ourselves in the face of these hardships. We often find ourselves having to make a choice, whether to let these things be the end of dreams or allow them to fortify our new hopes for our dreams and propel us forward to achieve them in spite of the hurdles.

To achieve your dreams may take endurance, strength, persistence and belief. ‘Dreams’ is a song that this reminds us of this. It also reminds us of the importance of holding on to our dreams as a source of hope for a brighter tomorrow.
