The Song

The Middle – Jimmy Eat World

If there was an anthem I could pick for my life, it would be ‘The Middle,’ by Jimmy Eat World.

This song to me, is a battle cry for those that feel left out. A song for the overlooked, a song for the strugglers. It speaks to those that are literally smack bang in the middle of the crazy rollercoaster that is life, with all of its glorious ups and downs (which is basically all of us). It is an anthem of encouragement for those who are stuck in difficult situations where there seems to be no end in sight. It reminds us that where there is a middle, just like there is a beginning, there will also be an end.

The song is a pure celebration of individualism. It focuses on the ‘you’ and the ‘them,’ with the emphasis being on the ‘you.’ It acknowledges the way we can so often compare ourselves to others and how, sometimes, people like to impose their judgements upon our lives. It taps into that feeling we can so often have, that we just don’t quite make the grade.

It literally snaps you out of the funk you are in and says, “Hey! Don’t write yourself off yet, it’s only in your head you feel left out or looked down on. Just do your best, do everything you can and don’t you worry what their bitter hearts are going to say.”

There have been moments in my life where this song has spoken directly into my situation. Being bullied as a kid for being overweight, I would put Jimmy on. When things in life weren’t quite working out the way I had planned, I would put Jimmy on. Going through this awful time in my life, dealing with so much loss and uncertainty…you guessed it! I need this song now, more than ever!

This song has gotten me through a lot.

Isn’t it sad how we can write ourselves off? How we can feel we don’t quite measure up to the expectations that the world has set for us. ‘The Middle’ says, forget them! You are doing just fine and you are going to be okay and at the end of the day isn’t that something we all need to hear once in a while.

The Lyrics

Hey
Don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just try your best
Try everything you can
And don’t you worry what they tell themselves when you’re away

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

Hey
You know they’re all the same
You know you’re doing better on your own so don’t buy in
Live right now
Just be yourself
It doesn’t matter if that’s good enough for someone else

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

Hey
Don’t write yourself off yet
It’s only in your head you feel left out or looked down on
Just do your best
Do everything you can
Don’t you worry what their bitter hearts are going to say

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

It just takes some time
Little girl, you’re in the middle of the ride
Everything, everything will be just fine
Everything, everything will be all right

Okay this was my favorite and I forgot to leave my comment here. Silly me. I loved this best of your choices for the simple reason that more people need to remember this. The world would be such a better place if they did! Thanks for taking up the challenge, your responses were a joy to read. 🙂
