Let My Love Open The Door (Three Day Lyrical Challenge Day 1!)

Many thanks to agirlwhowrites at The Quill for nominating me for the Three Day Lyrical Challenge! Day 1, here I go!

The Rules

1. Thank the person who nominated you. Thank you once again, agirlwhowrites
2. Share one of your favorite songs/lyrics one at a time for three days.
3. Nominate three other bloggers each day. (Or one, one is probably enough)

Today, I nominate thesouthernyankeemom Her tagline is, ‘Rocking the mom life – one day at a time’ and she is definitely doing that. She is a great writer and I really enjoy reading about her life with her little girl, cooking, eating and mostly having great fun together.

The Song

Let My Love Open The Door – Pete Townshend

There is so much to say about this amazing song. It seems to speak to my soul on so many levels. Released in 1980, ‘Let My Love Open The Door,’ was the soundtrack to my early childhood (being a child of the 80’s).

It starts with pure, unadulterated, synthesised joy and within a second it hooks you in. The uplifting melody, so full of promise, instantly pulls you in. The quality of Pete Townshend’s whimsical, raw and imperfect voice, beautifully melts into the instrumentals and creates a sound which is full of meaning and yearning.

Throughout, it repeats the line, “Let my love open the door,” giving credence to the awesome power and possibility love can bring into someones life.

I mentioned before about the song reaching me on so many levels, I’d like to explore this a little more. When I was a kid, this song signified fun and excitement, purely in its sound alone. I didn’t pay any real attention to the lyrics, I just knew that the sound woke my soul up somehow. Listening to it brought comfort, like coming home.

When I look at the lyrics as an adult, especially going through the things I have been facing, I can’t tell you how much of a lump in my throat it gives me now – but in a good way. The meaning of the words are so much more powerful to me at this point in my life. This song now signifies hope to me.

There is a verse in the song that says, “When everything feels all over, everybody seems unkind, I’ll give you a four-leaf clover, take all worry out of your mind.” This line feels so important to me now.

The song acknowledges the universal experiences of life that we all face, the tragedies that touch our lives. However, it then does something amazing. It weaves simple, beautiful and subtle acts of love and kindness into these tragedies. It is these acts that pull us through.

This is what I have experienced throughout this difficult time in my life. Love, saving me.

On another level, due my personal faith, I have always felt that this song could be interpreted as religious. I believe if Jesus was to pick a song to sing to us, of His love for us, His yearning to be apart of our lives and touch our broken hearts, then I like to think, ‘Let My Love Open The Door’ could be a strong contender.

May it bring to you what it has brought to me. Hope.

The Lyrics

When people keep repeating
That you’ll never fall in love
When everybody keeps retreating
But you can’t seem to get enough

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart

When everything feels all over
Everybody seems unkind
I’ll give you a four-leaf clover
Take all worry out of your mind

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart, to your heart

I have the only key to your heart
I can stop you falling apart
Try today you’ll find this way
Come on and give me a chance to say
Let my love open the door

It’s all I’m living for
Release yourself from misery
There’s only one thing gonna set you free
That’s my love
That’s my love

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door

When tragedy befalls you
Don’t let it drag you down
Love can cure your problems
You’re so lucky I’m around

Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
Let my love open the door
To your heart

Wow, this song has such deep meaning. And the way you described it was just beautiful – it truly has a certain soulful quality to it. That love can heal wounds and repair broken hearts, which is just so true. Really interesting to know that this song has been close to you ever since you were a child, I had one such song too. I’d sing it whenever I got the chance, and whenever I hear it it’s #ThrowbackChildhood, haha.
